Privacy policy

Location

We ask for your location only after you choose to share it, either by pressing the location button (which triggers your browser's own permission prompt) or by typing a place name. Declining changes nothing else on the page.

Most of the calculation happens in your browser: darkness and moon times, geomagnetic latitude, and the Kp you would need are all computed locally and never leave the device.

One part does reach our server. To tell you whether it will be cloudy, we send your coordinates rounded to two decimal places (roughly a 1 km grid, not your exact position) to our own /api/clouds endpoint, which forwards them to MET Norway for the cloud forecast. We do not store those coordinates, associate them with you, or keep them in any database — they are used to answer the request and as a short-lived (30-minute) edge cache key, and then they are gone.

If you save a location, it is written to your browser's own local storage under the key ue:loc and stays on your device; clearing your site data removes it. A shareable link encodes only the coordinates you deliberately chose to share.

Storm-alert email

If you sign up for storm alerts we store your email address, the date you signed up, the topics you chose, and the country your request came from (from the network, not from your location). It is used only to send those alerts. We never sell it or share it with anyone outside the processors listed below.

Retention: we keep the record until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it — there is no fixed expiry. Every alert email carries an unsubscribe link unique to your address; opening it asks you to confirm, and confirming deletes the stored record outright.

One honest caveat about that deletion. When you sign up we also send ourselves a notification email containing your address, so we know the list is growing. Unsubscribing deletes the stored record but does not reach into that mailbox, so a copy of your address can survive there in ordinary email history. If you want that copy gone too, email the address above and say so — we will delete it by hand. We would rather tell you this than let "we do not keep a copy" quietly not be true.

Cookies and local storage

Aurorix sets no cookies of its own. It does use your browser's local storage, all of it on your device and none of it sent anywhere:

• ue:loc — a location you chose to save.
• ue:snapshot — the last space-weather reading we successfully fetched, kept so a feed outage shows you the last good data (clearly stamped) instead of a blank page.

Clearing your site data removes both. Google AdSense may set its own cookies; see below.

Ads

We use Google AdSense, which may use cookies to serve and measure ads. See Google's advertising policies for what it collects; you can manage ad personalisation in your Google account or opt out at My Ad Center.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand aggregate traffic — which pages are read and roughly where visitors come from. It is configured for measurement only and we do not use it to advertise based on location. See Google's privacy policy.

Affiliate links

Some pages may carry affiliate links, marked as such where they appear: if you buy through one we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and it never changes what we recommend. Affiliate links set no cookies of ours; the destination retailer's own privacy policy governs what happens once you leave.

Who processes your data

• Cloudflare — hosts the site and runs the code at the edge; stores the alert-email list. Serving any page necessarily means Cloudflare handles the request.
• MET Norway — receives the rounded coordinates described above to return a cloud forecast.
• NOAA / NWS Space Weather Prediction Center — the source of the space-weather data. Requests to NOAA are made by our server, not your browser, so your browser is never exposed to NOAA and no personal data reaches them.
• Google — serves ads, as described above.

Your choices

You can decline or revoke location permission in your browser at any time; clear saved data from your browser's site settings; unsubscribe from alerts with the link in any alert email; and email us to ask what we hold about you or to have it deleted. If you are in a jurisdiction with statutory data rights (UK/EU GDPR, or a US state privacy law), those requests go to the same address and we will honour them.
