The 27-day outlook & solar rotation

The Sun rotates about once every 27 days as seen from Earth. That means a region that fired off a storm can swing back around and do it again roughly four weeks later. NOAA's 27-day outlook uses that recurrence to sketch the weeks ahead.

How to read it

The outlook lists, for each day, the expected 10.7 cm solar radio flux (a proxy for solar activity), the planetary A-index, and the largest expected Kp. The largest-Kp column is the one to scan: a run of elevated days flags a period worth watching.

What it can't do

It's a tendency, not a schedule. A quiet region can wake up and an active one can fizzle. Use the 27-day outlook to know which weeks to pay attention, then let the 3-day forecast and the live dashboard make the call.

After any big storm we note the recurrence date on updates — "the active region returns around…".
