How to actually see the aurora

Most "I didn't see anything" nights come down to five fixable things. None of them are about buying gear. This is the guide we'd give a friend.

1. Cameras see more color than your eyes — use that

Your eyes' color receptors barely work in the dark, so faint aurora often looks like a pale grey cloud to the naked eye. A phone in night mode, or a camera on a 5–15 second exposure, gathers light over time and reveals the green and pink that's really there. Take a test photo to the north even when you think there's nothing. It's the single best trick for the northern US and UK. More in aurora photography.

2. Dark-adapt — and kill every screen

Give your eyes at least 20 minutes in real darkness. One glance at a bright phone resets the clock. Use red light if you need light at all, and get away from town — light pollution beats a weak aurora every time.

3. Aurora comes in substorm waves — be patient

Aurora isn't a steady glow you flick on. It builds and releases in substorms: long quiet stretches, then a sudden brightening and dancing that can last minutes before fading again. People leave during the quiet part and miss the show. If conditions are favourable, give it a couple of hours.

4. Know the difference between horizon and overhead

At mid-latitudes, aurora usually appears as a glow low on the northern horizon, not overhead. That means you need an unobstructed north-facing view — a lake shore, a field, a ridge — and it means the Kp you need for a horizon glow is lower than for aurora overhead. 5. Respect the moon and the clouds

A bright, high moon washes out faint aurora (check the moon note in your location verdict), and clouds end the game entirely. Aim for clear skies and, ideally, a moon that's down or thin.

Treat every forecast as odds, never a promise. The people who see the most aurora are the ones who go out on "maybe" nights, get somewhere dark, point a camera north, and wait.

Common questions

Can you see the northern lights with your eyes, or only with a camera?

Both — but they look different. Your eyes see aurora best when it's bright and overhead; faint aurora low on the horizon often reads as a pale grey glow to the eye while a phone camera (night mode) or a long-exposure shot reveals green and pink. That's not a trick: camera sensors gather light over seconds and are more color-sensitive in the dark than human night vision. Give your eyes 20+ minutes to dark-adapt, and take a test photo to the north even when you think there's nothing there.

How much warning do you get before an aurora?

Two kinds. A CME-driven storm can be forecast a day or more ahead as a NOAA G-storm watch. But the sharpest signal is the solar wind measured at the L1 point about 1.5 million kilometres sunward: when its magnetic field turns strongly southward, aurora tends to follow within roughly 30–60 minutes (the time it takes that wind to reach Earth).
